Will tactically execute what Hezbollah strategically wants

070903

In a lecture in Washington, Professor Walid Phares, senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies said "the so-called consensus President some are talking about in Beirut, will in fact execute tactically what Hezbollah wants strategically." Phares, one of the architects of the UNSCR 1559 said the "Syrian-Iranian axis is attempting to mollify the situation in Lebanon to preempt the election of a new President who would implement the relevant UN resolutions and the goals of the Cedars Revolution." Phares called on the March 14 Movement (anti-Syrian coalition supporting the Government) to quickly reach a consensus on a Presidential candidate representative of the Cedars Revolution and of the majority of the Lebanese People and participate in the electoral session so that with the majority of votes they already have, come with a new President

Hezbollah and its cohorts are trying to intimidate the March 14 movement by stating that the choice is between two options: crumble the Seniora Government and elect a consenus President, or lead the country to partition and conflict. In reality, the Terror forces in Lebanon are putting all their efforts to abort the election of a President who will lead the country towards freedom and security." Addressing the issue of consensus, Phares said: "if the radicals in the country wants to join the consenus, they should surrender the weapons of Hezbollah, cut their ties to the terror regimes in the region and join the political process." Phares concluded that the only strategic path for the liberation of Lebanon at this time is for the democratic majority to complete the Cedars Revolution by electing a new President and moving forward. Such a move will insure the international support and rally most Lebanese behind a new Government."
