Summary of Events

The Arab League announced that the Assad regime has proposed amendments to the observers’ mission in Syria. The League added that the amendments are currently under consideration. On another note, a draft resolution that would call for an immediate end to violence and the adherence to the Arab League proposed plan has been submitted to the UN. Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Turkey joined Germany, France, and UK in backing this draft resolution. Meanwhile, France and Turkey called for more international pressure on the regime and more sanctions. France announced it doubts the regime’s observance of the Arab League’s terms and believes that more sanctions are needed, while Turkey said it shall wait for the regime’s reaction to the League’s plan.

Assad forces killed at least 14 demonstrators today in what was called the Friday of Expelling Ambassadors, where around 200 demonstrators broke out calling for world governments to expel Syrian ambassadors abroad in protest of the regime’s violence. In Homs, regime forces announced a curfew since the morning, threatening to kill anyone on the streets. Regime forces then brought in news channels to film the empty streets of Homs to show that there are no protests; however, demonstrators took to the streets in all the neighbourhoods and cities, not heeding the regime’s threats. Regime forces retaliated by opening fire on all of them.

In the meantime, Russian Aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov docked in the port of Lattakia. The aircraft carrier arrived with the destroyer Admiral Chabanenko and two submarines. The fleet came with a confirmed shipment of tanks.
