On the 2:nd of December, the
Swedish chapter of the WLCU arranged a conference for the celebration of
the (so far accomplished) independence day of Lebanon and for the full
support of the UN resolution 1559 so that we could see a fully
accomplished independence day next year.
The conference gathered many
Swedish politicians, both inside and outside the parliament.
Among the attended there were also
a strong presence from the Lebanese forces party and the Aramaic
democratic organization. Representatives from the Tayyar watani el
horr party, Future Movement and the Lebanese union and the Lebanese
association were also attended including the representative for the
Lebanese embassy in Sweden, Madame Christiane Gezrawi.
The host of the conference Mr.
Jack Bassous presented the list of speakers and welcomed every freedom
lover that had helped Lebanon through the years and wished for a
prosperous future for Lebanon and the Middle East.
The president of the Swedish
chapter, Mr Maroun Aoun
opened up the conference by addressing the attendees with a few well
chosen words. Maroun talked about the role of the 1559 and the Lebanese
unity that both got Lebanon free from the Arab Syrian occupation.
Maroun mentioned the very
important issue of the reopening of the Swedish embassy in Beirut.
Maroun then read the written
letter that the president of the WLCU in the world, Mr. Anis Garabet had sent. Garabet congratulated the Lebanese people and cheered for
the unity inside Lebanon.
Then it was the turn of the
Swedish parliament member, Mrs. Eva Björling.
She spoke very openly with a free spirit and lots of courage. Eva who had
met with President Bashar al Assad talked now about the importance that
Syria now fully corporate with the UN investigation team led by Mr. Detlev
Mehlis. She will work inside the parliament to push the government to
reopen the Swedish embassy in Lebanon and she will continue her work to
support the free Lebanese in their path toward real democracy. Eva
mentioned a very important issue and that was the role that Hezbollah
could play inside Lebanon. She said that the international community
welcomes the change this party could do from being a militia to becoming a
political parliamentary party. She put also a little red light warning
point that it could be dangerous to let such a party in the government
when the party doesn’t believe in the true European democracy and the
equal human rights for all citizens.
After Mrs. Eva the turn came to
Mr. Roger Haddad, a young Swedish politician with a Lebanese
background. Roger was in Lebanon several times and in 2005 he saw a hope
in the faces of the people that he had never seen before, the liberation
was shown in happy faces. Former parliament member
Mr.
Nils Oskar Nilsson has
become a well known face for the Lebanese in Sweden. He has got involved
in the Lebanese cause for a long time now and he has even got to be banned
from entering the country because of his free reports he wrote when the Baath occupation was a reality in Lebanon. Mr. Nils
spoke about his journeys to Lebanon and about the relation we have with
the Lebanese organizations working for the Lebanese cause.
After that we could hear the
representative of the ¨Center party¨ Mr. Melki Afram.
He pointed out the role Lebanon
has played and should always play in the democracy in the world. He
assured that his party would support the Lebanese free people in the
future until they reach a true democracy and peace.
Adding to the conference an extra
flavour Mr. Elie Bou. Sleimen,
the
Lebanese Swedish parliament candidate in Sweden added that the democracy
in Lebanon is nothing we need to start today; it is something that has
been in the Lebanese culture and way of life for a long time. What we need
to do today is to help Lebanon be free from all the outside negative
dictatorships.
Last but not least the turn had
come for the coordinator of the Lebanese International committee for the
implementing of UNSCR 1559 in Sweden Mr. Joseph Saouk.
Josef said a few words about the situation and showed a picture film the
committee had made about the Lebanese situation until we got the UN
resolution 1559 and the Cedar revolution as the fruit of that. He
mentioned the coordinator for the committee inside Lebanon that was
scheduled to attend the conference but due to the impossibility for him to
go the Swedish embassy in Damascus he couldn’t get his visa ready.
The Lebanese all over the world
will continue to support every step and every event that bring more peace
and democracy to their mother land.
3 weeks ago there was a conference
in Washington to support the UN resolution 1559 where the president of the
Lebanese International committee for UNSCR 1559
Mr. Tom Harb and much of the Lebanese lobby in USA,
Brazil, France, Sweden and Lebanon were gathered to support the liberation
of Lebanon with the help of the resolution 1559.
In the beginning of the year 2006
there will be a new conference in Brussels, Belgium.
The Lebanese are convinced that
their Cedar land can only be saved by the Cedar revolution and the Cedar
revolution wants the implementing of resolution 1559.
Long live the Liberty Loving
Lebanese and may Sweden continue supporting the UN resolution 1559 and
helping the democracy process in the Middle East.
