Assad
Reshuffles Military Cabinet;
and Free Syrian Army
Spokesperson Missing
Assad promoted Commander of
the First Battalion Ali
Ayyoub to the rank of Vice
Commander in Chief. The
Alawite commander has served
in the ranks of the
Republican Guard. The Assad
regime has recently disposed
of the Ex-Minister of
Defence Ali Habeeb, who
refused to invade Hama. This
recent reshuffle might be
seen as a bid to reinforce
the ranks of the army with
experienced commanders,
while others see it as an
effort to reinforce the army
with Assad loyalists.
In the meantime, the Free
Syrian Army (FSA)
addressed Erdogan
in a recorded video asking
him to investigate the
whereabouts of Hussein
Harmoush, the spokesperson
for the FSA. Harmoush has
disappeared after meeting
with Turkish intelligence
units in a refugee camp in
Hatay.
On the ground, the number of
those killed in Syria was at
least 25. Hama, Idlib and
Homs suffered the most
losses.
In Homs, many defections
took place in different
parts of the city, prompting
the regime to react
violently against the
mutineers who joined the
Free Syria Army forces
(FSA). According to the FSA,
at least 100 Assad loyalists
were killed in the past 24
hours, while twelve armoured
units were destroyed. The
regime responded with a
heavy crackdown, killing at
least 19 civilians. The
regime shelled the areas of
Khaldiya, Bayada, Bab Sbaa
and the town of al-Hoola
with tanks and artillery.
Other areas of Homs were
targeted by heavy fire and
security forces as well,
while al-Bir hospital was
attacked by Assad loyalists
who kidnapped all the
patients and doctors. The
Assad thugs have also been
using ambulances to raid and
infiltrate neighbourhoods.
Nonetheless, demonstrations
did break in Homs and in the
surrounding towns of
al-Hoola and Qaseer,
demonstrators marched out in
solidarity demonstrations
for Homs. Reinforcements of
over 150 tanks have been
seen heading toward Homs,
adding to the more than 500
tanks already present. The
regime is planning a major
offensive against the FSA.
Airstrikes will be used.
In Banyas and the nearby
village of Maqrab, Deir
Azzour and Bukamal, a
massive house to house
search and arrest campaign
took place, along with
destruction of private
property. The city and the
surrounding towns, including
Qouraya, did go out in
demonstrations.
A new security checkpoint
was set in central Damascus
in Qadam, while Assad
loyalists have been
extensively deployed in the
surrounding neighbourhoods.
Hajar Aswad was raided by
security forces where people
were randomly snatched off
the streets.
Tanks are moving in on the
town of Jorbin in Idlib, in
an effort to arrest
smugglers who ferry Syrians
to Turkey. Demonstrations
occurred in the city and the
surrounding towns of Binsh,
Saraqeb and Maaret Nuaman.
Demonstrations occurred all
over Syria in spite of the
crackdown, in Hama and the
nearby town of Teebat
al-Imam; in Deraa, Nimr,
Dael and Niwa, where a
soldier was shot in the head
for refusing to shoot
civilians; and in Aleppo and
Hasakeh.
In Tripoli, the Syrian
ambassador to Libya fled
after the liberation of the
city. New documents unveiled
by the rebel forces show the
extent of cooperation
between Assad’s forces and
Gadhafi’s. Assad had
assisted Gadhafi’s regime
with intelligence and media
matters. Dictatorships
always stick together,
through good and bad, as
they can only rely on their
similar modules for support.
That explains many of the
alliances Assad has with
international and regional
states and entities, such as
Russia, Iran, and China.
