Spain Considers the Syrian National Council the Representative for Dialogue with the Syrian People

Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jiménez confirmed yesterday that the Spanish government will look to the Syrian National Council (SNC) to discuss issues concerning Syria, and that the channels of dialogue with the Syrian regime have been closed. During her meeting with an SNC delegation headed by Executive Office member Ahmad Ramadan on Wednesday, November 23, the Spanish Foreign Minister said that Bashar al-Assad needs to step down. She also expressed Spain's "support for the SNC as the main interlocutor of the Syrian people, who are seeking freedom and democracy". During the meeting, the two parties discussed the steps the SNC has already taken to complete its structure, the latest developments with regard to the Arab League, and Europe’s intent to escalate economic sanctions and political pressure on the Assad regime.
