The
Russian and Chinese Veto Gives the Assad Regime a License to Kill
Without Being Held Accountable
Syrians and others around the world yearning for freedom and dignity
looked to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to issue a strongly
worded resolution, one that would clearly condemn the Syrian regime's
crimes; the atrocity and impunity with which it kills civilians,
including women and children; and the genocide it commits in
exterminating entire families. However, the world was shocked when the
Russian and Chinese governments vetoed the draft Arab-European
resolution.
The Syrian National Council (SNC), which participated in the UNSC
deliberations all week, condemns the governments of Moscow and Beijing
for obstructing the passage of the draft resolution. The SNC holds both
governments accountable for the escalation of killings and genocide, and
considers this irresponsible step a license for the Syrian regime to
kill without being held accountable.
The SNC emphasizes that state interests should not be to have alliances
with corrupt, bloodthirsty regimes, but rather to build partnerships
based on mutual interests. Therefore, the SNC calls on both Russia and
China to immediately reassess their positions and to not block the will
of the Syrian people, who clearly desire the attainment of their rights
and freedoms.
The Syrian people, who are confident in victory with God’s help, have
not relied on any third parties for support. The people of Syria
reaffirm their intent to continue their peaceful Revolution, topple the
regime, and unite in support of the SNC and the Free Syrian Army until
our country reaches the desired freedom and democracy.
The Syrian people, the Arab people, and empathizers around the world are
invited to take all political, economic, and diplomatic measures with
countries that have hampered the issuance of the UNSC resolution. These
measures include direct economic boycott, terminating cooperative trade
agreements, and reevaluating relationships that bring together these
countries with our people and our friends.
The SNC will continue to move forward politically at all levels,
including its support for the Revolution. The SNC will approach the
United Nations General Assembly to adopt an international resolution
that supports the rights of our people. The SNC will also work to
establish an international communications group from nations that
support the struggles of the Syrian people to further isolate the Syrian regime and build a free, democratic Syria.
