8 or 14 of March but there is a third way for the Lebanese Christians

2012-12-02

The Christians in Lebanon have since 2005 been divided between 8 and 14 of March coalitions. The first one is led by Shiite Hezballa supported by the Iranian and Syrian regimes. The second one is led by the Sunni Future movement of Hariri supported mainly by the Saudi but also by many Arab states.

The international community and the decision making capitals represented by the UN, USA, Russia and EU are very careful in taking side. Their stance has been that the Lebanese government should continue to have an open dialogue between all parties.

Some Christian leaders were eventually driven to take positions unfamiliar to their voting base. Those with Hizballa had to support the regime in Syria despite the feud between the Lebanese Christian community and the Baath regime in Syria. The Christians with Hariri on the other side had to support all kind of Arab struggles like the Palestinian cause in its deepest and extremist face represented by Terrorist labelled Hamas, that is also despite the a feud between the Christian resistance and the Palestinian militias.

In the middle of all this, the Christian population of Lebanon is longing for leaders that can truly represent them and never negotiate over their religion, identity, history and culture. Many Christian organisations and parties outside the 8 and 14 of March coalitions are working right but with very small economy and no foreign allies. For 2 mandate periods the game of 8 and 14 of March has been going on in Lebanon. It is time that the Christians choose new alternatives for the parliamentary elections 2013.
