Lebanese Opposition Maintains Pressure on Syria
Washington DC, October 11, 2004 /RPS News/ - Druze leader Walid Jumblatt continued his campaign of pressure against the Assad regime by denouncing on Saturday the extension of Emile Lahoud's term orchestrated by Damascus on a weekend in concert with prime minister of Lebanon Rafiq Harari.
Speaking at the funeral of Ghazi Abu Karoum, who died in a Beirut bombing aimed at minister Marwan Hamadeh, he said: "National unity means safeguarding democracy, protecting freedoms and protecting the constitution. National unity means correcting the mistake of extending" Lahoud's mandate to be able to confront international pressure". .
Jumblatt leads a bloc of politicians in Lebanon's parliament opposed to Lahoud's extension, which was supported by the Ba'athists in Syria directly challenging the sovereignty of Lebanon.
Jumblatt, a former Cabinet minister and militia leader during Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war, withdrew three allied lawmakers from the Cabinet to protest Lahoud's extended presidency.
