Jordan Demands Land Back from Syria
Washington DC, October 29, 2004 /RPS News/ - The Hashemite Kingdom has formally made a request for Syria to return Jordanian land it grabbed in 1970.
According to sources in Washington, Jordan is seeking not only to increase the pressure on Syria but also to correct an issue that has been dormant since 1970 when Syria seized the land from Jordan under the pretext that it wants to save Jordan from a PLO uprising. It has never given back that land.
In 1970, the orders came from Noor Eldine al-Atassi, the then president of Syria, to enter Jordan to crush Yasser Arafat cornered in a Palestinian camp. What ensued was a failure not only to complete the mission when Syrian divisions came under fire from by the Jordanian Air Force but it gave Hafez al-Assad, the Air Force General in command at the time, the pretext to launch his military coup against al-Atassi that culminated in today's Ba'ath regime.
Since, Syria's dreams of Greater Syria were partially realized when it failed to vacate from Jordanian lands in 1970 and it invaded Lebanon in 1976. Today's Jordanian lands are settled with about 20,000 Syrians all illegally implanted.
