Syrian Tribal Leader Supports Reform Party

Tribal leaders form a "League of Syrian Tribes" to unite for democracy.

Washington DC, October 25, 2004 /RPS PR/ -- In a letter addressed to Farid Ghadry, president of RPS, Dr. Mohammed Salih Al-Gaida, leader to the Mhallamya tribe in northern Syria and son to Sheikh Daham Al-Gaida, provides the tribe's support to the Reform Party and its program for liberal change in Syria.

The Mhallamya tribe is located in Northern Syria between the Turkish and the Iraqi borders. It boasts a population of about 200,000 Syrians and is considered one of the most important tribes inside Syria. The Mhallamya tribe enjoys the respect of all the other tribes in the region for their courage and leadership. They have particular close relationships with the Bakara tribe located around Aleppo and the largest tribes in Syria.

Further to that, Mr. Al-Gaida has formed the "League of Syrian Tribes" (LST) in order to coordinate with the other tribal leaders inside Syria to build on the vision of a "New Syria" that is peaceful and democratic.

The Mhallamya tribe has been in Syria for 250 years. Their largest constituents though are found in Turkey and in Iraq. In Turkey, according to their leader, their numbers swell to 350,000 citizens.

In recent years and since the rise of the Ba'ath party to power, the tribe has suffered from a policy of intentional divisiveness by the Damascus regime that by design has polarized the people and created a vacuum of support.

The Mhallamya tribe was very active in the uprising of March 12 in Qamoshli. Some of their people still languish in Syrian jail.
