Syria is sending
the Bush Administration a strong signal
Washington DC,
October 1, 2004/RPS
News/
-- A
car bomb in Beirut has wounded former Lebanese cabinet minister Marwan
Hamadeh and killed his driver early on Friday. Reached
by phone, RPS members in Lebanon confirmed that Minister Hamadeh was
sitting in the front seat and his bodyguard in the back when the explosion
happened. The injuries Minister Hamadeh sustained were to his head
and foot.
Hamadeh was rushed
to the American University Hospital in Beirut and was reported to
be in stable condition.
Minister Hamadeh is
a Jumblatt follower.
In the last month,
Jumblatt, the leader of the Druze community in Lebanon whose father was
killed by the Ba'athists in Damascus in 1976, has lead the opposition
against Syrian hegemony in Lebanon by opposing the change to the Lebanese
Constitution.
The explosion
occurred in the Lebanese capital's corniche area where the American
Community School and the International College, both United States
organizations, are located.
The bomb exploded
as Hamadeh's car was driving past the school.
The Ba'athists were
sending two signals with this bomb: One against the U.S.
by making it happen next to two American organizations and two to the
Jumbl;att faction, which has gained momentum in his opposition to Syria.
