The Syrian intelligence in occupied Lebanon has responded to
the roomers, just prior to the release, of
the “tough” report prepared by the UN
Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan, by pursuing the implementation of the
Syrian regime’s doctrine of terror. A bomb blast in the Lebanese capital
Beirut destroyed the car of former Economy Minister Marwan Hamadeh,
wounding him and killing at least one person. Mr. Hamadeh has recently
resigned from the Syrian controlled Lebanese government, protesting the
Syrian imposed 3-year term extension to the Syrian-installed Lebanese
“president,” Emile Lahoud.
The Council of Lebanese American Organizations (CLAO) denounces Mr.
Hamadeh’s assassination attempt and again advises the Syrian dictator
regime to immediately withdraw its troops and intelligence network, and to
disband its sponsored armed militias.
Ever since October 13, 1990, the day that
the Syrian occupation forces ousted the last legal and legitimate
government led by P.M. Gen. Aoun, the Syrian Ba’athist regime along with
their puppet governments in Lebanon have been in full control over every
aspect of life in occupied Lebanon. Such regimes are to be held
accountable for the terror events, such as the latest assassination
attempt, that take place in the country. The Syrian installed Lebanese
regime does not represent the will of the freedom seeking Lebanese and
must be replaced by an interim government in preparation for
internationally supervised elections.
CLAO believes
that the Syrian defiance to the UN Security Council resolution 1559, as
confirmed and documented by the UN Secretary General, will result in
sanctions and possible military actions that would surely put an end to
its Ba’athist oppressive regime. Instead of fighting against and standing
in the way of peace & democracy in the Middle East, CLAO strongly
recommends that the Assad regime learn from the democratization efforts
underway in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to implement similar measures in
Syria. Furthermore, the Syrian Ba’athist ambition for a greater Syria must
cease and the occupation of Lebanon must end. The Syrian dictator regime
must submit to the will of the free world before time runs out!
