A Protest By The Vast
Majority Of The Lebanese
Monday, March 14, 2005 was a day to remember in Lebanon. The vast majority
of the Lebanese, over one & half million packed the streets of Beirut and
the highways leading to it, demonstrated in support of a free, sovereign,
democratic, and independent Lebanon and demanding a full international
investigation into the vicious assassination of Prime Minister Rafic
Hariri. The protest, the largest ever in the history of Lebanon,
confirmed once again the unified position against the Syrian occupation.
The gathering was about four to five times the size of the
anti-sovereignty demonstration organized by the Syrians, Palestinians,
Iranians, and Hizballah on Tuesday March 8, 2005.
The Council Of Lebanese American Organizations (CLAO) salutes the
freedom-seeking Lebanese for their outstanding courage, defeating all of
the Syrian installed Lebanese regime’s intimidation tactics. In the Koura
district in Northern Lebanon and in the Marjaoun area in the South Syrians
surrogates belonging to the “Syrian Socialist National Party” attacked the
peaceful convoys transporting people to join in the demonstration in
Beirut inflicting bodily injuries and smashing car windows. Furthermore,
In the Bekaa Valley, Hizballah threatened and prevented thousands of
citizens from joining other patriots at The Martyr’s Square. However, the
people of Lebanon have resolutely decided: Syria must withdraw, as Lebanon
must be free and sovereign.
CLAO believes that President Bush is right again: “Democracy is on the
march.” After Afghanistan and Iraq, the Lebanese have decided to face the
occupiers and peacefully defeat tyranny. The people of Lebanon have
realized that democracy is indeed on the march and have determined to
fulfill the dream of freedom. One more time, as President Bush has
recently declared, “The trumpet of freedom has
been sounded and that trumpet never calls defeat."
